"Imagine a world without free knowledge"

As many already know, Wikipedia as well as tonnes of other websites have blacked-out to protest SOPA and PIPA.

Support the peaceful protest.

Edit: Trololololo
Thanks everone for the lulz. This stamp has only been posted for one hour and already massive shitstorms are underway. Cap whatever you please, and feel free to continue to provide the lulz.

Edit 2:
Fuck! Google's blacked-out: [link]

Edit 3:
Thank you all for arguing, agreeing, discussing, and favouriting (a word which has only become a verb because our beloved internet).
As I am unable to thank you all individually for the favourites, I thank everyone in whole. (Besides, most of you probably don't even want me to thank you.)
Those're my two bits. G'day.

I'm all for stopping piracy, but this is the wrong approach.

The main reason people consume piracy is not poverty, because poor people is most likely to not to buy even for the cheapest price thus they are not and will never be target public, but bad distribution. Bad distribution leads to people never getting products and/or having to import it and/or getting it for ridiculous prices. The fact that sometimes things are badly censored and translated or done in cheap materials does not help at all.

Steam is a good example of good distribution: It's world-wide and the fact that there is no shipping and boxing involved can cut the price even to 70%. Movies and TV series had tried to copy the formula with sites like Netflix, but fail miserably because the catalogs are shitty, rarely update and use IP bans, it's like trying without trying at all.

I remember when Shonen Jump Japan released their free mangas online without IP block, it was in Japanese but hey I could take a look at what was being read in Japan, VIZ media comes and switch NA Shonen Jump to digital and it's blocked for people outside the U.S. when before I could buy the magazine in stores here.

Another example, Nexon Korea doesn't do IP blocks so I can play Korean Mabinogi Heroes (Vindictus), but Nexon NA does IP block everyone outside the U.S.

TL;DR I don't consume piracy because I'm greedy or poor, I consume piracy because companies won't take my money (but still I never download or buy bootleg music or video games, I'm limited to anime and manga online), and the world will be a better place is Gabe Newell became the CEO of every company.

As someone who lives in a country where comic books, movies and TV shows are distributed in an extremely lazy way, I agree with this completely.

My downloads only restrict in things that I can't really find here or buy via shopping sites.

Exactly. Many films I have obtained through "unconventional" methods were only because they were unavailable on DVD/VHS/Laserdisc or whatever. Think that yes, if they pass, then at least make all information available to buy affordably.

I also obtain films online through bootleg sources because there's no way to pre-view a film before watching. I'll watch it online though "unconventional" means and if I like it, then I'd buy it. I remember a while ago Netflix saying they'd soon have every film ever made available. Well, it's been years and I still can't find "Schupalast Pinkus" from them.

TL;DR: I agree.

Wikipedia isn't as bad as some people like to say it is. Not only has it been found to have less errors than the Encyclopedia Britannica, because of all the people who edit it. If you're bothered enough to scroll down to the page's sources there's a whole plethora citations for journal articles, books, and scholarly websites, that you can look at. It's a good place to start research, or if you need to check something.

If wikipedia were to go down, it would make it a lot harder for the average person to have a reliable quick source of general information, and it also offers ways to find more scholarly articles. Not every library can afford new editions of an encyclopedia each year.

And a lot of the time, I personally don't use it for finding historical information, but looking up a television show, or something quick and easy. Remove the ability to do that and the whole world will regress.

Yeah, it's a time and money saver. Before wikipedia, there was Encarta, and sifting though google and yahoo. Neither of which was efficient.

Also how would bored kids play, "click to Jesus/Hitler?"

At least it's doing it right, by taking the site down completely.

The US government seems to be falling into it's old habit, of not thoroughly thinking the implications of it's laws before signing them into legislation. I mean a site owned by the government could get shut down for linking to another site, the infringes copyright. Twitter, facebook, and all the social media they love so much is also pretty much screwed.
